Mentors Corner
The mentor can plan on spending an average of 2 hours a month. If the champion is the heart of the project, then the mentors are the life blood. You are the ones invited into the life of the child. I have seen times when practically the same words come from the parents mouth and someone else the boy respects (not saying the boy does not respect their parents), and the boy may disregard the parent’s words but latch on to the words from the other respected individual. I do not know why this occurs, but I know it to be true. Some doctors say there is a physical change in the chemistry of the brain that causes this. I also think it has to do with the fact that God has created us to be in community, depending on one another because the sum is greater than the parts in the larger church body.
Also, mentors should not spread themselves too thin. The vision for the mentors is that they have an opportunity to affect this boy for the rest of his life. They need to have the time and energy to dedicate to the boy. It would be really bad if a mentor agrees to involve themselves in the life of the child and then does not have time or emotional resources to commit.
Using HON materials the mentor is responsible for: 1) Praying for the boy 2) Meeting at least once a month with the boy to cover your topic 3) Doing one special event over the course of 10 months
